IDENTITY PROTECTION

GBG and Truyu: enabling real-time identity visibility at scale

  • 250,000+ Australians were affected by identity crime last year, a 25% increase on the year before
  • GBG’s identity network enables coverage of 60%+ of Australian merchants, creating visibility of identity usage at a national scale.
  • 90,000+ alerts issued since May 2024, giving people the ability to act before fraud escalates.

Identity crime in Australia is accelerating. In the past year alone, more than 250,000 Australians were impacted.

GBG and Truyu identified a shared opportunity to shift identity protection from reactive detection to real-time visibility and intervention.

Using GBG’s identity verification network and real-time decisioning capabilities, Truyu built a consumer-facing identity monitoring service that puts these insights directly into the hands of Australians.

The challenge

Identity crime in Australia is accelerating. In the past year alone, more than 250,000 Australians were impacted, a 25% year-on-year increase, reflecting both the scale and sophistication of modern fraud.

As more services move online, identity is used across an expanding number of journeys, from banking and credit applications to telecommunications and digital onboarding. Yet most fraud detection models remain reactive, identifying suspicious behaviour only after an identity has already been misused. This creates a critical gap. Individuals rarely have visibility into how and when their identity is being used, allowing fraudulent activity to continue undetected across multiple services.

This creates a critical gap. Individuals rarely have visibility into how and when their identity is being used, allowing fraudulent activity to continue undetected across multiple services.

The opportunity

GBG and Truyu identified a shared opportunity to shift identity protection from reactive detection to real-time visibility and intervention. GBG's network scale provided the underlying data infrastructure; Truyu's consumer-first product vision provided the means to put that intelligence directly into the hands of Australians.

At the core of this opportunity is the strength of GBG's identity verification network. Each time an identity is verified across GBG's customer base, a signal is generated. At scale, this creates a powerful, real-time view of identity usage across a significant proportion of the Australian economy – a capability that Truyu recognised as the foundation for a genuinely new consumer protection model.

By making these signals actionable through Truyu's platform, the partnership enables entirely new models of identity protection, moving from enterprise-only decisioning to consumer-visible control.

The solution

Using GBG’s identity verification network and real-time decisioning capabilities, Truyu built a consumer-facing identity monitoring service that puts these insights directly into the hands of Australians.

Through the Truyu app, users register their details and provide consent for monitoring. From that point on, every identity verification event across GBG’s network can be assessed in real time.

With coverage spanning more than 60% of Australian merchants, GBG’s data provides the scale required to detect identity usage at the moment it happens.

When a verification matches a monitored identity:

  • A real-time alert is triggered
  • The user is informed which business is involved and what type of document was used
  • They can immediately confirm legitimate activity or act on suspicious behaviour

This approach transforms identity verification from a background control into a visible, actionable signal, enabling intervention before fraud can take hold.

Behind the experience, GBG’s platform orchestrates identity signals, monitoring rules, and decisioning logic, enabling Truyu to deliver a simple, consumer-first interface built on enterprise-grade intelligence.

Impact at scale

Since launch in May 2024, the combined model has demonstrated how real-time identity visibility can operate at national scale:

  • More than 90,000 alerts issued

  • Over 16,000 identity verification events detected

These signals represent moments where individuals had immediate awareness of their identity being used, creating the opportunity to act before harm occurred.

At scale, this not only benefits consumers, but supports the wider ecosystem by:

  • Reducing downstream fraud losses

  • Limiting repeated identity misuse across multiple providers

  • Strengthening trust in digital onboarding and verification journeys

Their timely alert enabled me to act immediately and shut down the malicious activity. Absolutely invaluable.

Real-world impact

For individuals, the impact is immediate and tangible.

John had previously been a victim of identity misuse. Despite updating his documents, fraudulent attempts continued across different services, without his knowledge.

Through Truyu, powered by GBG’s real-time signals, John was alerted the moment his identity was used in multiple telco applications.

Because the alerts were immediate, he was able to act before any accounts were successfully opened. He contacted the providers, reported the activity, and secured his identity before further damage occurred.

For John, this wasn’t just detection, it was prevention. It changed his ability to respond from reactive to proactive, restoring confidence in how his identity is used.

Redefining identity protection

Identity crime is increasing in both scale and complexity. Addressing it requires more than better detection, it requires earlier visibility and faster intervention.

By combining GBG’s identity intelligence and network scale with Truyu’s consumer experience, this partnership demonstrates a new approach: one where identity verification events become real-time signals for protection.

Together, GBG and Truyu are showing how identity data, when used responsibly and at scale, can move beyond verification alone to enable a more transparent, proactive model of identity protection.
