CSR - GBG Got Talent

GBG believes in giving our bit back to the communities we're part of. Each year, team members from every of our 8 offices in APAC vote on a charitable cause to support. This CSR tradition becomes even more important today with more charitable organisations needing our support to help the needy. On 4th September 2020 we had our first fundraiser – we doodled and pitted our wits against one another, and raised SG$5000 for 8 local charities in 5 countries. We had another initiative on 4 September, where our internal GBG talents created virtual performances.

Setting the Virtual Stage

4 September – a seemingly usual day, but in fact, is a day where the GBG APAC teams across 8 offices are waiting in anticipation for the airing of the talent performances which they have respectively put up just earlier that week.

The "backstage" team and our 2 masters of ceremony have been rehearsing and are on standby with their systems up and redundancy measures in place.

And the Show Begins

Think

  • Heavy metal rock band from the Canberra office
  • TikTok dancing from the Jakarta office
  • Skate boarding with a chicken and salsa dancing from the Melbourne office
  • Asian cooking demystified from the Shanghai office
  • A blending of voices for "We are the World" from the Kuala Lumpur office
  • A two piece band accompanying a British, an Italian and a Singaporean on a rendition of Elton John's "Your Song" from the Singapore office
  • Solo singing performance from the Beijing office
  • Solo acoustic performance, guitar solo, and a lip sync of the Spice Girl's song "Wannabe" from the Sydney office

It was mind-boggling – how technology has enabled creativity and cohesion even with social distancing and remote working and transcended international boundaries and cultural diversities. The performances were genuine, heartfelt, and seamlessly put together. The performers entertained, and the audience were very entertained. The chat feature during the virtual performances was afire with comments, applause, catcalls, praises, amazement, and calls for encore.

The virtual show was attended by a total 322 attendees, including our colleagues in UK and EMEA,  APAC most certainly, as well as GBG’s vendors and customers. Everybody is welcome to join and support the fundraising.

We had the audience vote on their favourite performance in return for an incremental donation that GBG would make to the designated charity selected by the local office. In the final minutes, it was Canberra who took the lead in the number of votes and won firstplace and the runner up was Sydney.

The Good It Brought

All countries had reached their fundraising targets!

While the sums raised were not huge, every little bit counts in times like this. We thank everyone and all the organisations for joining hands with us in this year's fundraising activity to help the children, elderly, and the underprivileged in need and make a difference together during these challenging times.
