The Challenge

As more student services move to online, education providers are facing new and growing challenges around trust, compliance and fraud prevention, especially during the enrolment process.

• Remote enrolment risks – Without in-person contact, it’s harder to be sure that the person enrolling is who they claim to be. This opens the door to   fraud, fake identities, deepfakes or forged documents. 

• Meeting eligibility requirements - Education providers must confirm a student’s citizenship or residency to ensure they qualify for government funding or student loans, verifying this accurately and efficiently is critical. Protecting exam integrity – institutions need to make sure the student sitting the exam is the same person who enrolled, particularly as online and remote exams become more common. Identity fraud can compromise academic standards and credibility. 

• Balancing data privacy with accessibility – Students expect digital-first experiences, but providers must also comply with privacy laws and ensure verification processes are fair and inclusive for all students. 

Without strong identity verification, education providers risk damaging their reputation, breaching compliance requirements and admitting students under false identities. That can affect funding, academic integrity, and trust in the institution itself.
