If you work in compliance or risk at an iGaming company, you may be familiar with the following challenges when it comes to setting up the ideal onboarding identity verification flow for your company:
The iGaming industry is highly competitive, which means you’re constantly having to optimize your identity verification flow to find the right balance between the onboarding journey, remaining compliant and combatting fraud. Players are very friction averse and only becoming more so, which is why offering the best possible experience is so crucial.
In this article, we’ll be covering:

There are three elements to getting ID verification right:
The key is to strike a balance between the three and constantly find ways to optimize each one.
Many gaming companies want operate in more than just one country or region, and want to be global as soon as possible.
But each country and region has different regulators, requirements and customer habits. For example, the US gaming industry is one of the most heavily regulated sectors globally. Not only do they have stringent state gaming regulations, but US gaming companies must comply with federal Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Financing of Terrorism (CFT) requirements. On top of that, only certain states have legalised gaming, with differences between online-only, in-person only, or both – which will require you to geo-locate your customers to make sure you are not violating state law.
In the EU, some countries share similar legislative frameworks, but there is no EU standard for sports betting or online gambling, which means that each country is different.
In the UK, gaming operators need to complete verification by checking multiple sources, requiring two pieces of information about an individual to be verified against two unique sources or a document – also called “2+2 check”.
Getting identity verification right means having a strong understanding of the requirements you need to meet in each region, as well as staying updated on new regulations and what they mean. The best way to approach this is to have dedicated people on your team and identity verification partners who are well-informed on the regulations and will ensure you are compliant at all times.
With so many gaming options available for players standing out in the market is the only way to acquire and retain customers. One of the key aspects of online gaming that players care about is having the smoothest, user friendly sign up process.
What do players want specifically? They want the fastest “time to play”: the shortest time possible between wanting to bet and actual gameplay. This means a slow, manual onboarding can cause delays and lead to frustration.
The best way to offer a superior onboarding process is to monitor the gaps in your current process and map out the point where there may be unwarranted friction, especially in key moments – e.g. when someone is about to place a bet or add money – whilst ensuring that players are protected and you meet affordability requirements.
To fight fraud and bonus abuse, your identity verification flow needs to go beyond just basic identity matching: you want to be able to confirm customers are who they claim to be with a multitude of tools, including email and mobile device intelligence. For AML, you also need to be able to automate certain assessments (such as sanctions screening or Politically Exposed Persons (PEP) lists), and do those on a continuous basis so you’re aware if a new match is found on an updated watchlist.
Fraudsters are savvy and are always searching for vulnerabilities, whether it’s through your systems to steal data, or to using a platform to target players with social engineering, phishing scams and more.
This is where having a strong identity verification platform with advanced tools makes such a difference. For example, sharing consumer intelligence between iGaming businesses is a great way to beat the bonus abuse cheats. GBG Trust is a data network that does exactly that, whilst ensuring privacy-by-design.
However, you also want the right fraud prevention measures that are non-invasive and don’t affect the player experience. For example, a tool that will use the best of AI-powered features and human experts to generate accurate results and strong decisions.
As you grow, it becomes impossible to scale properly without an identity verification or Know Your Customer (KYC) provider that can help you find the right balance between regulatory compliance, efficient player onboarding, player protection and fraud prevention.
Here’s what to look for in a provider:
As you enter new markets, you want an identity provider that can help you launch in those regions and offer everything you need to onboard customers within one tool, so you don’t have to keep integrating with new vendors.
For example, if you want to launch in the US, your KYC provider must have a gaming supplier license, and also be able to operate in the specific state you want to launch in. If you want to launch in Latin America, the provider must be able to have the right form settings to onboard customers with both maternal and paternal surnames. If you’re launching in certain European countries, they need to be able to work with Digital IDs.
Ideally, the provider goes beyond just using traditional data sources. In many regions, there’s a lack of rich datasets, which can make it a lot harder to onboard underbanked or unbanked populations that may not have utility bills or banking history. The right identity proofing solution will allow you to use consent-based analysis of users’ digital footprints to verify their identities.
Not only should the provider be able to operate in those regions, but they should also have a strong understanding of the regulations in these markets to ensure you meet local and international AML/KYC laws, player protection and affordability requirements and are constantly up to date with new regulations.
Since user experience is so integral to standing out as a product and retaining customers, it’s crucial to work with a provider that allows you to build the workflow that will allow you to onboard as many good customers as possible.
In terms of workflow, you also want it to allow you to set up personalized workflows that can be automated based on risk, allowing you to only apply additional authentication measures when a user is deemed higher risk. Even better, the tool potentially allows you to A/B test different workflows and automatically select the workflow with the highest conversion rate of good customers.
You also want a vendor that is digital-first and uses an API and allows you to use multiple assessment options to meet compliance, and is also compatible with your current tech stack and platform, as well as able to handle high volumes during peak gaming periods – such as the Super Bowl or World Cup.
Finally, it’s crucial that the vendor also helps you prioritize player protection through affordability and financial risk checks, which are critical to compliance, reputation and protecting customers. The right identity verification solution should support this by enabling frictionless, behind-the-scenes checks that assess a player’s financial situation without creating drop-off-inducing delays. This ensures that players are not only who they say they are, but are also playing within their means.
By integrating affordability screening directly into the onboarding flow, operators can strike the right balance between player acquisition and social responsibility, offering safer gaming experiences while reducing the risk of harm or regulatory penalties.
A better user experience translates to more good customers and therefore more revenue. You don’t want a solution that takes a one-size-fits-all approach – you want one that allows you to customize as much as you need to increase match rates while still protecting vulnerable players.
In certain geographies, gaming is still a relatively new industry and the regulations are less clear. For this reason it’s helpful to work with a provider that has experience in more mature geographies and knows how to handle compliance in those regions where the gaming market is still developing.
The right partner will help you implement workflows that they know have proven to perform effectively with other gaming operators in that region. This allows you to have an optimized process right from the get-go.
We are a leading global identity technology business operating in 195 countries with experience in the identity verification space for over 30 years. We have combined global data with our innovative technology that allows us to process more than 62 billion transactions every year for over 20,000 businesses. We verify identities, assess risks and protect against fraud for some of the best-known gaming companies in the world, such as Flutter, Entain and Evoke.
Here are a few reasons why gaming companies partner with us:
Managing regulations and onboarding flows in multiple countries is one of the biggest challenges gaming companies face due to the complexity of each jurisdiction, the new regulations and the fact that these are often “grey” areas without clear guidance. Having to find a new ID vendor every time you expand into new markets will only bloat your tech stack and increase costs and complexity.
With our solution, gaming companies can go global from day one. Gaming companies can onboard players in 195 countries, access hundreds of datasets and can verify identities in under 30 seconds. You can also complete comprehensive checks against 450+ global sanctions lists, including OFAC, Interpol, and UN Sanctions, during onboarding and beyond without requiring human intervention. We can also process eKYC in over 50 countries and verify digital IDs.
As one of the few identity verification companies that’s been operating for over 30 years, not only do you access deep experience in many countries but also our understanding of new regulations and the wider landscape. We have a dedicated regulatory policy team that works with us for every new market we enter.
Due to the high number of high-quality datasets and solutions we have access to (such Loqate’s address verification, an address matching tool more accurate than Google Address Verification), you’re able to reach and acquire more customers, including thin-file populations. For example, in the US and Canada, we can tap into both public and credit data sources in the US, enabling some of the highest match rates. In the UK, we can complete data verification with full credit universe as well as financial vulnerability checks for affordability.

If you’re working with multiple vendors to onboard one customer, making sure every tool integrates correctly and offers the best possible flow can lead to a lot of time, energy and money wasted.
With our orchestration solution, everything sits within one platform, allowing gaming companies to automate a large part of the onboarding flow using both dataset matches, document verification and biometrics.
You can also design workflows and onboard customers through a single API and into their tech stack. You can create tailored customer journeys that you can visualise and deploy ready-made. You can also use pre-built templates to speed up workflow design, and set risk thresholds to ensure you comply with regional KYC/AML regulations. This allows you to fast-track decision-making for identities that are trusted, and add more authentication measures only when needed.
Even more impactful, you can track performance and complete A/B tests to determine which workflows onboard the highest number of genuine customers, and track performance over time. You can drill down into specific journey decisions to understand why or why not a customer was onboarded.
With this level of configuration and control, gaming platforms are able to increase match rates for genuine customers as much as possible.
One of the biggest challenges with fraud is how much of an impact it has once you scale. When your platform is small, it’s easy to detect and block fraud. But on a larger scale with more to lose, fraudsters get savvier and the impact can be a lot higher.
With our solution, customers can access GBG Trust, our unique customer intelligence network. This is a cross-industry identity intelligence network, bringing together over a thousand global businesses and billions of identity insights to find fraud patterns, whilst ensuring privacy-by-design.
The huge benefit of this network is that it delivers early insights that help recognise bonus abusers and great new players at first point of contact, speeding up onboarding for good players and adding authentication if there is suspicious activity. This consortium allows operators to prevent piracy, multi-accounting, unfair gameplay and chargeback fraud – all while remaining compliant.
Here’s how it works: when the customer has first contact, a GBG Trust score is generated between 1 - 100. This score is based on any suspicious data patterns or activity detected across all iGaming businesses in the network, such as data inconsistencies, data manipulation or high-velocity data submissions, allowing you to block fraud before it’s onboarded. If their score is low, you can set up a risk-based trigger within a workflow to block fraud at first contact.
We also use an email and mobile intelligence solution that operates in the background and can flag if a user appears to be a fraudster, whether it’s an account takeover or whether it’s real. We also use patented technology to authenticate government-issued IDs, as well as use forensic and Computer Vision Machine Learning (CVML) tests to detect IDs that have been tampered with.
With these advanced fraud solutions, we are able to deliver a 96% identity fraud detection accuracy with a low GBG Trust score, and our customers are able to block fraud and promotion abuse at a much more effective rate.
How Atlantic Lottery saw their pass rate improve from 68% to 82% with GBG
Atlantic Lottery is an iGaming operator that works in four Canadian provinces and services more than 650,000 customers across those regions.
Their legacy IDV approach involved basic KYC checks to check that players lived within its territory, as well as AML checks for casino players. But they lacked insight and control over onboarding results.
As Adam MacLeod, Digital Product Manager at Atlantic Lottery shares: “We could only see pass/fail results and couldn’t analyse why new applicants were failing KYC. That prompted us to try other solutions to improve our pass rate and the player experience, while maintaining the required verification standard.”
They switched to our identity data verification solution for onboarding players in 2020, and quickly saw their customers’ pain points during registration. This enabled them to make quick changes to address those concerns, which resulted in a 7% uplift in pass rates.
Eventually, they also started to see their casino player pass rates declining, but weren’t sure why. Our identity verification solution was the only one that checked against both Canadian credit agencies while also giving us flexibility in configuration, so they decided to adopt it for their casino players as well.
Once they’d fully implemented our product for their casino, their pass rates increased from 68% to 82%, resulting in 14% more players joining in the past year as a result. This vast improvement also cut manual verification calls to Atlantic’s call centre by at least 30%.
As Adam says: “That’s a huge saving and a big win for us and our customers.”
“The way data is presented and used is very smart and the expert personal support I receive from GBG is top notch. They collaborate on proof of concepts and cost/benefit analysis with every change we make. I don’t see GBG as a vendor, it’s a very strong strategic partnership.”

In gaming, ID verification must meet jurisdiction-specific compliance mandates such as 2+2 checks in the UK, geo-location enforcement in the US, and localised ID schema handling in LATAM (e.g., maternal/paternal surnames). Operators also face evolving AML/CFT obligations and must ensure interoperability with digital ID frameworks (e.g., BankID, eIDAS). A robust IDV solution must handle jurisdictional complexity while maintaining compliance continuity as new regulations emerge.
Advanced ID verification platforms should support configurable, risk-based orchestration of onboarding workflows via API. This includes auto-triggering lightweight checks (e.g., email/device fingerprinting) for low-risk users, and escalating to step-up authentication (e.g., biometric liveness, documentary checks) for higher-risk profiles. The ability to A/B test flows, analyze drop-off points, and adjust thresholds dynamically enables operators to maximize pass rates without breaching regulatory thresholds.
In markets with thin-file populations or low data coverage, federated identity (via government or telecom databases) and consent-based digital footprint analysis are critical. Using signal data from devices, social, and behavioral sources enables triangulation of identity in the absence of credit data. A next-gen ID verification system must blend deterministic and probabilistic models to accommodate a broader identity spectrum while maintaining regulatory defensibility.
Leading ID verification gaming platforms should leverage consortium-based intelligence (e.g., GBG Trust Network) to detect velocity patterns, synthetic IDs, and collusive bonus abuse in real time. Layered risk scoring from signals like TOR/VPN usage, device spoofing, or PEP/sanctions triggers should feed into dynamic risk-based workflows. Integration with behavioral biometrics and continuous authentication ensures ongoing fraud mitigation post-onboarding.
Gaming operators that implement adaptive, risk-based ID verification solutions consistently report measurable improvements across key performance indicators. These include higher onboarding pass rates – often increasing by 10–20% – as well as reduced manual verification volumes and customer support burden. Key drivers of this uplift include dual-bureau verification, configurable decisioning workflows, and real-time analytics to optimize performance. When properly deployed, these solutions enable operators to scale faster, stay compliant in complex regulatory environments, and capture more high-quality players without compromising fraud controls.
